In 1960 Nick Beehler – at that time Bar manager of the Sheraton West Hotel, Los Angeles – won the 1960-edition of the Annual Cocktail Competition, as organized by the UKBG (USA Branch): Beehler has named his winning cocktail Evenings Delight.
In 1965 Nick Beehler competed in the first significant cognac competition ever staged in the USA, set up by what was then called the Californian Bartenders Guild, in conjunction with the Cognac Association. 67 Guild members took approximately five hours to narrow their field down to the four finalists. Nick Beehler of the Sheraton West Hotel was revealed as the grand prize winner, his winning entrée being a before dinner cocktail that was called Cognac Avant.
