March 11 was the birthday of Dorothy Elizabeth Gish. Dorothy Gish was a major American movie star of the silent era, alongside her sister Lilian Gish. Gish, who was a childhood friend of Mary Pickford, later developed into a director and writer. Dorothy Gish was noted as an excellent comedian, gaining also a great success on the stage and was later inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame.
Dorothy Gish would go on to excel in over 100 short films and features, many of them alongside her sister Lillian.
Dorothy Gish died in 1968 in a clinic in Rapallo, Italy (aged 70) where she had been nursed for two years, with sister Lillian at her side. Dorothy Gish was entombed in Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in New York City, her sister Lillian was later interred beside her. Dorothy Gish is tributed in the Dorothy Gish Cocktail, a tantalizing concoction based on Angostura® Reserva, alongside De Kuyper Apricot Brandy and modified with orange and pineapple flavors.
